Throughout Charleston’s history, multiple successful groups have been committed to preserving its historic character. Many of Charleston’s most charming buildings date back to the 1700s, such as Rainbow Row, the Old Exchange, the Dock Street Theatre, St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, the Heyward-Washington House, and the Powder Magazine. Charleston’s most impactful leader in preservation was Susan Pringle Frost. Frost was a Real Estate agent who was passionate and dedicated to saving historical residencies in Charleston. She independently worked for nearly nine years and in 1920, established a group called The Society for the Preservation of Old Dwellings. Her advocacy guided Charleston to realize the value of its rich history, which has now become a major attraction and factor of Charleston’s charm today.
